My name is Satoshi Odanaka (Member of Morioka Soukai and Kumomote Club).

I have been climbing mountains since I was 16, I have been to the Himalayas since I was 20, and I have been climbing walls since I was 21.
At the age of 17, I joined Morioka Soukai, and when I went to a winter training camp in the Northern Alps with my seniors, I felt the charm of mountaineering in the harsh winter mountains outside of the prefecture.
After that, I went through Iwate to the mountains and rock walls of the Northern Alps in my youth.

I was away from the mountains for a while at the same time as I became independent due to work, but when I went hiking to rehabilitate a broken leg, I was fascinated by the beauty of the mountains and returned to the mountains.

More than 30 years have already passed since the time when I climbed recklessly, but when I slipped back in time, there was youth when I was young.

Meeting and interacting with friends, learning about the beauty of nature, the greatness of nature, the splendor of mountains, and the harshness of mountains, I believe have supported my life up until now.

From now on, I would like to spend the rest of my life without regrets while touching the mountains.

We would appreciate it if you could feel free to participate, such as those who are interested in mountaineering, beginners, etc., not limited to mountains in Iwate Prefecture.

About this tour

More info ◎ From the village of Matagi, aim for a snowy mountaintop with a good view!

Mt. Sawajiri and Mt. Oarasawa are located in the northern part of the Mahiru Mountains, and are connected by a ridgeline with Mt. Waga and Mt. Koge to the southwest, Mt. Asahi to the northwest, and Mt. Mokko to the northeast.

The ridgelines and peaks reached by climbing through a deep beech forest from the Kaizawa district of Nishiwaga-cho, the village of Matagi, offer a splendid 360-degree view.

The Waga massif in winter is not particularly blessed with the weather due to the influence of the Akita prefecture side, and the snow is deep, so there are few people who climb the mountain.

Start walking from the last private house in Kaizawa village, walk along the forest road of cedar forest, cross twice, and reach the ridge leading to Mt. Okoya. If you are skiing on the mountain, it is quicker to climb the left ridge leading to the Maeyama junction instead of following the summer road.

Climbing the ridgeline from the trailhead will lead to a steep climb, and you will reach the junction of the county boundaries. A beautiful beech forest continues from here, and Mt. Mokko can be seen through the twigs.

There is no trail on Mt. Mokko, so it can only be climbed when there is snow.

The climb to the Maeyama junction becomes steep again, and Mt. Iwate begins to appear in the northeast direction. Mt. Koge-dake appears and disappears through the twig on the left, and we reach the peak of 1,091m.

One of the pleasures is waking up in time for the sunrise and, if the weather is nice, leaving early to see the sunrise. Leave the tent as it is, pack the minimum necessary items in the sub-pack and follow the gentle ridge.

After climbing a rather steep climb, you will reach the prefectural border junction, and soon you will reach Mt. Sawajiri. The ridgeline of Oarasawa-dake with overhanging snow cornices continues to the west. After descending the ridgeline and finishing the steep climb while paying attention to the snow cornices overhanging on the right side of the Obonai River, you will reach Mt. Oarasawa-dake.

The summit offers a 360-degree view, and the ridgeline continues to Mt. Waga and Mt. Koshita to the southwest, Mt. Asahi to the northwest, and Mt. Mokko to the northeast.

Asahidake, which follows the ridgeline to the northwest, has no trails, so it is a very attractive mountain that can only be climbed from here during the snowy season or from the Akita Prefectural River's Bunadarusawa. The weather in winter is changeable, so return to the tent early, withdraw the tent and return to the outward route.

◎ The following courses are planned.
