Satoshi Odanaka

Language: Japanese

My name is Satoshi Odanaka (Member of Morioka Soukai and Kumomote Club).

I have been climbing mountains since I was 16, I have been to the Himalayas since I was 20, and I have been climbing walls since I was 21.
At the age of 17, I joined Morioka Soukai, and when I went to a winter training camp in the Northern Alps with my seniors, I felt the charm of mountaineering in the harsh winter mountains outside of the prefecture.
After that, I went through Iwate to the mountains and rock walls of the Northern Alps in my youth.

I was away from the mountains for a while at the same time as I became independent due to work, but when I went hiking to rehabilitate a broken leg, I was fascinated by the beauty of the mountains and returned to the mountains.

More than 30 years have already passed since the time when I climbed recklessly, but when I slipped back in time, there was youth when I was young.

Meeting and interacting with friends, learning about the beauty of nature, the greatness of nature, the splendor of mountains, and the harshness of mountains, I believe have supported my life up until now.

From now on, I would like to spend the rest of my life without regrets while touching the mountains.

We would appreciate it if you could feel free to participate, such as those who are interested in mountaineering, beginners, etc., not limited to mountains in Iwate Prefecture.

About this tour

More info ◎ Go through the virgin beech forest and look out over the Waga massif!

Koge-dake is a mountain that forms the source of the Waga River.

There are two trailheads, one from Takashita Falls and one from Kamioarasawa Village. The forest road is short, about 3.5 km from Kamioarasawa to the Takahata trailhead.

From Kaizawa, take Prefectural Road No. 1 up the hill and turn right at the Kamioarasawa bus stop. From here, walk about 3.5km on the forest road to the Takahata trailhead.

As you climb the ridgeline that continues gently from the trailhead, the cedar forest changes to a beech forest. As the altitude increases, the beech trees grow thicker, creating a beautiful beech forest. There are rabbit footprints scattered everywhere, as if they are giving us directions.

The climb to the 1,066m peak has some steep slopes, but once you reach the top, the view opens up and the climb becomes gentle. Mt. Iwate can be seen to the northeast, and Mt. Hayachine can be seen in the background.
Pitch your tent where the wind doesn't blow and enjoy the winter mountain tent life.

One of the pleasures is waking up to the sunrise and, if the weather is nice, leaving early to see the sunrise from Mt. Koge. Leave the tent as it is, pack the minimum necessary items in the sub-pack and follow the gentle ridge.

Before long, the summit ridge of Mt. Koge-dake comes into view. You can walk anywhere when there is snow, so it's fun to walk while making your own course.

If you climb straight up the snowy slope, you will reach the summit ridgeline, and if you climb the slightly steeper slope at once, you will reach the summit ridgeline. The view is 360 degrees, and Mt. Waga-dake, which protrudes the snow cornice into the Waga River, is approaching in front of you. If you are lucky with the sunrise, it is the best view.

The ridgeline to the north passes through Mt. Nesugedake, and divides into the ridgeline to Mt. Oarasawa to the north, Mt. Asahidake, and the ridgeline to Mt. Wagadake to the southwest.

After crossing two small peaks on a windswept ridgeline, you reach the summit of Mt. Nesugedake, which is slightly higher than Mt. Kogedake.

From the summit, if the weather is good, you can see Mt.

Mt. Yakeishi to Mt. Kurikoma to the south, Mt. Hayachine and Mt. Yakushi to the east, the ridgeline of Mt. Iwate to Mt. Akita-Komagatake to the northeast, and Mt.
The weather in winter is changeable, so return to the tent early, withdraw the tent and return to the outward route.

Until the end of May, you have to walk on a forest road, but it is attractive to walk on a gentle beech forest ridge with no climbers while stepping on the snow.
