Seisen Yasukawa

Language: Japanese

My name is Seisen Yasukawa and I run a pottery class called Onigawara Kobo Seisen in Himeji City, Hyogo Prefecture. I have been touching clay almost every day for over 30 years. Clay is strange, isn't it? If you hold a round piece of clay tightly with your hand and open it, it will take on the shape that it has been applied with force. It will not return to its original state like a rubber ball. This is called plasticity. When I touch it, my heart calms down and I feel somewhat nostalgic. It is said that the rock will weather and become a clay mineral after a tremendous amount of time.

According to what I heard, clay minerals already existed 3.5 billion years ago and are said to be deeply involved in the birth of life. (Clay mineral origin theory) Clay that dissolves in water and softens is hardened if it is dried and baked in a kiln at a high temperature and does not dissolve even if it is put in water. I would like as many people as possible, including those who have never had a machine to touch clay, to experience the joy of pottery (manufacturing). I feel attached to the work that I have worked so hard to create. Please experience it once.

More info Pottery experience ☆ Let's make your own work with "Pottery experience" at "Onigawara Kobo Seisen", about 10 minutes by car from the world cultural heritage "Himeji Castle"! Firing is done in an electric kiln using "Bizen ware clay" or "clay blended with Bizen ware clay and red clay" on a hand-cranked potter's wheel. The baked color will be “Haikaburi” or “Hidasuki” (“Porcelain soil” can be used if requested).

Experienced guides will give you kind and courteous advice. Please enjoy the taste unique to handmade using "Bizen ware" clay. If you are a first-time customer, you will be asked to look at "photos" and "samples" as you make your own (if you have any items or photos you would like to make yourself, please bring them with you). Recently, there are many people who participate in couples, families, and friends! Please feel free to join us.

[Things you can make]

1kg of red clay will be used to make 1 or 2 items such as a "teacup", "teacup", "plate", and "mug cup". It takes about 45 days for the work to be baked. You can choose to receive the completed work at the experience location at a convenient time or send it (please pay the shipping fee separately).
